Helmut Newton: A Retrospective at Foam Amsterdam

IMG_1769

Helmut Newton’s Retrospective opened its doors at Foam’s gallery in Amsterdam on 17th June. The mind-blowing retrospective of Newton’s work has overtaken the entire space on Amsterdam’s Keizersgracht. The exhibition includes more then 200 photographs, ranging from rarely exhibited early prints to monumental works of the legendary “King of Kink”.

Marcel Feil, the deputy director of artistic affairs at Foam kicked of the press event with an interesting interview with Matthias Harder, the curator of Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, thanks to which this great show could also happen at Foam. The lovely surprise was Newton’s former model Sylvia Gobbel who offered some exclusive insight into one of the Newton’s most iconic “self-portraits” where Sylvia posed for Newton next to Newton’s wife June watching the shoot. The works in the exhibition are mostly vintage prints from the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. In a different coloured rooms of Foam’s gallery space, the viewer has an excellent opportunity to see Newton’s different genre of his works ranging from his earlier works through to his notoriously known and iconic fashion photographs, celebrity portraits and nudes. The screening of Helmut by June, a film made by Newton’s wife June, can be seen as well.

Foam partnered with the Austrian luxury fashion brand Wolford that became the main sponsor of the exhibition. “With these photographs, Helmut Newton has created works that perfectly represent Wolford’s DNA. We are very pleased about our partnership with Foam, as it gives us the ideal platform to present our artistic heritage,” explains Ashish Sensarma, the CEO of Wolford. Supporting the major retrospective marks the beginning of Wolford’s commitment to a long-term program for female artists. The first highlight is presented along with Newton’s exhibition at Foam. Artist Sayuri Chetti has been selected to create a work of art made from Wolford yarns and materials especially for the exhibition.IMG_1667sBW

Foam 3h simultaneously brings works of three young contemporary photographers Carlijn Jacobs, Elizaveta Porodina, and Philippe Vogelenzang curated by Foam’s own Mirjam Kooiman. The three very different but incredible talents showing their own visual connection certainly influenced by the legendary Newton.
