La Bella Lavandaia by Christó

“My heroine leaves her home to escape from routine and sarcastically finds herself in a laundrette trying to free herself from a form of slavery”: Christó on capturing the women in a still-existing patriarchal society.

The beautiful laundress, as ‘La Bella lavandaia’ translates from Italian, is Christó’s take on how a woman gets tired of the marriage routine and decides to abandon her house. She goes to wash the clothes while trying to find someone else to marry. The captivating and modern idea is enriched with an extraordinary aesthetic form that sees the woman engaged no longer in the domestic routine but the routine to make herself beautiful. It indicates the passage from the idea of patriarchy to the awareness of the power of the woman who can change her life and take the value of love to a whole new level. Love is the satisfaction of needs that are no longer spiritual but material, which reflects the modernity of adjective relationships. Our protagonist abandons herself in a pose of absolute relaxation that contrasts with the rough and fast environment of a laundromat.
